When to Start Potty Training: 5 Signs Your Child Is Ready

Potty training can be one of the most challenging tasks for any parent. From timing to techniques, every family hopes for a process that can be completed quickly and smoothly. However, in reality, the time it takes to potty train can vary depending on the child's age, personality, and the methods employed. (Every child is different, so try not to compare yours to others of a similar age).

Read on to discover some of the signs that your little one is getting ready to start potty training, how to prepare your child for potty training, and how to actually start potty training.

Signs Your Child is Ready for Potty Training:

1.Awareness of Wet or Dirty Diapers: Your child demonstrates awareness when they've soiled their diaper and may express a desire for it to be changed.

2.Recognition of Urination: They can recognize when they are urinating and may verbalize this awareness to you.

3.Indicators of Needing to Urinate: Your child exhibits signs such as fidgeting or seeking out a quiet or secluded area when they need to urinate.

4.Anticipation of Urination: They can anticipate the need to urinate in advance and may communicate this to you.

5.Extended Periods of Dryness: Your child can stay dry for at least an hour or two. If they can maintain dryness for longer periods, it indicates readiness for successful potty training. However, if they frequently wet themselves in less than an hour, potty training may be more challenging and require extra effort.

When to Initiate Potty Training:

The ideal time to begin potty training your child is when they demonstrate signs of readiness. While many parents start considering potty training around the age of two to two and a half, the timing ultimately depends on your child's individual development, both physically and emotionally. There’s no perfect age to start putting them on the potty.

Typically, children under 12 months old have little to no bladder or bowel control. Between 12 and 18 months, their control is still limited. Most children won't achieve full control until around 24 to 30 months of age. And, in the U.S., the average age toilet training begins is between 2 and 3 years old, according to the AAP.

How Long Does it Really Take to Potty Train?

Choose the Weekend

You need to spend a whole weekend accompanying your child. During the process of introducing new things to children, parental companionship and support are especially important. In the process of toilet training, it may not go smoothly at first, but continually affirming and reassuring children that it's okay even if they haven't succeeded will help them release their burdens and complete toilet training more quickly.
